This is the second time sport climbing is an official event in the Asia Games. The first was back in 2018 in Palembang Indonesia. For the speed climbing event, the Chinese and Indonesian are the hot favourites.
Men’s Combined Final Results
Sorato Anraku had been on a tear ever since he was promoted to compete at the senior level this year. His first year competing at the IFSC World Cups he had already won gold in both boulder and lead. More impressive, he had captured the overall boulder and the overall lead climbing title in his first year competing with the world’s best climbers and by the way he is just 16 years old. So we cannot expect anything less from this young man at the 2023 Asian Games.
Sorato finished head and shoulders over the rest of the field by dominating in both bouldering and lead, taking home the Asian Games gold medal in sport climbing.

Women’s Combined Final Result
Another Japanese climber who is considered the hot favourite to walk away with the gold medal is Ai Mori. The only woman to have defeated Janja Garnbret to win gold in an IFSC competition is few and far between. Although not a world-beater at bouldering, Ai Mori was able to finish joint first place for bouldering in the semi-finals alongside Seo Chaehyun of Korea and Zhang Yuetong. Both Seo Chaehyun and Ai Mori also topped the semi-final route for the lead event and finished joint first. However, due to bad weather, the final was cancelled and Ai Mori took the top spot based on count-back to qualification bouldering results where Ai Mori had four tops in five attempts while Seo had three tops and one lower zone.

Men’s Speed Final Results
Team Indonesia with Leonardo Veddriq and Kiromal Katibin had both held the world speed record in recent years. Team China on the other hand had been very consistent in 2023 frequently finishing on the podium. As with speed climbing it is not about being fast. You need to be faster than your opponent and not make any mistakes. The climber with the most composure and ability to perform when it matters will win. It was Reza of Iran who showed consistency throughout the game and was able to defend his Asian Games speed-climbing title.
