How I got hooked on climbing
I came to know about rock climbing while on a trekking trip at Breakneck ridge in New York. Trekking the ridge requires me to scramble over rock faces along the way and I loved it. As I couldn’t do outdoor trekking all the time and found rock climbing as a cheaper and more convenient alternative. I got myself on a climbing membership and the rest is history. Unlike soccer, rock climbing doesn’t need 11 people. To me, rock climbing is a unique sport where I need to battle against myself to push hard in order to solve climbing problems and climb more efficiently.
When I’m climbing, it requires me to be laser-focused on the problem, and put aside all the worries and concerns from the life that I might face. But what I really love most about climbing is the community that the sport organically has. From loud cheers of allez to finish a route, to be able to talk so easily to ask other climbers for betas, I daresay rock climbing is one of the last few sports that facilitates conversation so easily and bonds people together.
Inspired by this community-driven sport, I created a telegram group and added all the climbers I knew in Singapore to share multi-passes, find rock climbing buddies, and discuss betas in different gyms. In December 2019, we partnered with 3 gyms in Singapore to offer discounted day passes during off-peak hours. Moving forward, ClimbPass aims to be a super app for climbing, where climbers are able to get the best climbing equipment at discounts and much more.
Climbing has slowly but surely become a way of life for me. Besides fitness, it has enabled me to travel off the beaten path to to climb, meet fellow climbers from around the world and develop a mindset that helps me overcome obstacles I face.
